Disposition:
✔ SELF-ESTEEM: Hypnos keeps his standards for himself fairly low. He never got praise when he was younger, and he suffers from “me, really?” when complimented and praised. This is a result of the strained interpersonal relationships he has with most people he meets - except Zagreus. He tends to doubt that he’s good enough to get the praise, and when he honestly receives it, he doubts the recipient of it. He’s gotten a little better thanks to Zagreus, but consider it low and a work in progress.

✔ EMPLOYEE: A lot of Hypnos’ story within the context of Hades is finding himself and his work in Hades. He greets people who turn up through the Pool of Styx and maintains a list. But throughout, he is frequently found sleeping on the job by Zagreus. It gets so bad that he’s on the verge of getting fired due to his own laziness. One of the goals through the story is to help him become a better employee while still being himself. Zagreus helps this by helping improve his relationship with Thanatos. Thanatos helps him discover a method of time management in the series - making lists, which Hypnos takes a liking to. This enables him to organize his time for all the things he does - which is mostly sleep, work, and sass people. He does so much better that at some point there’s an easter egg where he’s shown to have gotten Employee of the Month.

✔ FAMILY: Hypnos loves his family dearly and deeply. However, he does not have a good relationship with them, but not by his own doing. Both Thanatos and Nyx (and arguably Charon, too) all keep an arm’s length from him. He frequently disobeys Nyx when she asks him not to call her “Mom” while in the house, but he persists. His relationship with her is so rough that when she is the one to praise him, he doubts that it’s from her - going so far to think it’d more likely be a message from Hades himself. His relationship with Thanatos steadily improves throughout runs of the game, going from being distant brothers, to having at the least a polite working relationship, to Thanatos working with him on his job. Hypnos would absolutely love to spend more time with his brother. The fact that his family keeps him at arms length and he still loves them deeply and wants to engage with them says a lot about his loyalty and care towards the people he adores.

✔ FUN: Hypnos loves to tease people. In general, he’s a fairly friendly guy who has no problem talking to random people - which is probably why he was put in the position to greet people who turn up in the house through the Pool of Styx to start. He loves to make jokes, give bad advice (“Try not dying!” is something he is most famous for saying to Zagreus, who he’d call his best friend). He brings a certain level of joy and cheer to the House of Hades, which is an otherwise dark setting. His good-natured attitude is almost a breath of fresh air. His approach to fun and friendliness isn’t the same as others, as he tends to use jokes and fun as a way to befriend people, rather than

✔ SLEEP: While there’s not a lot to say about this - it’d be silly to not include it! Hypnos is often found sleeping. Sleeping on the job, being woken up by strangers. Hypnos loves to sleep. He likes to do it so much that it almost got him fired. He constantly looks half-asleep, and is a perpetually tired-looking guy. This means he also has a fairly relaxed demeanor.

Suitability:
Hypnos is a generally friendly guy. He’s pretty hard to frazzle and frustrate, and he’s fairly easy going. This is probably due to his constantly tired state. Hypnos is not typically a high stress individual. While he’s going to have the initial surprise of “this sure isn’t Hades” and there’s a sky with stars’ he’s going to settle in fairly easily. At least to the setting where he doesn’t have to do a job in order to get by. He actually has never really left Hades, and isn’t prone to exploration or desire to put in the effort to see the outside world, so this is going to be a whole new world.

His first response to physical affection is going to be to startle. His relationship with his family tells us that affection and physical touch probably wasn’t a common thing that happened - since both his brother and mother kept him at arm’s length. So - he will be pretty surprised if someone should choose to hug him and it will take effort for him to initiate that touch. However, Hypnos will not actively resist or deny the idea of Synchrony to earn Manna. In fact, after time, he’ll find it way more convenient than having to work or do a job. Especially if he learns he can cuddle up and sleep next to and on top of someone.

Condition upon arrival: Alive and well.

Abilities:
The most important thing to note is that Hypnos is the God of Sleep - and the game doesn’t much discuss the abilities he has - however, from his title and interactions, there’s some things to note.
✔ Hypnos is functionally immortal due to being a god; however, he is not invulnerable.
✔ Hypnos’ domain is sleep. He can put people to sleep and spends his time with humans and dreams. He is unable to impact anyone while they are awake, as his domain is just sleep.
✔ Hypnos can float, which works great when you’re a tired, lazy individual and just want to float and sleep anyway.

Other than being the God of Sleep, Hypnos has a few extra skills:
✔ Amazing, talented, and gifted at sleeping absolutely anywhere. Anywhere.
✔ List-making. Hypnos discovered that he really enjoyed making lists as a time management skill, and ended up getting really good at it.
✔ Great advice: Who doesn’t want amazing advice that suggests you don’t die, dodge, kill everyone? Honestly, he should start an advice column.
